7 Top Nigerian Footballers Playing For Other Countries In The FIFA World Cup


​The FIFA world cup is live and underway and we’ve seen the footballing action from world football Stars representing their countries in Qatar.

While Nigeria failed to qualify for the global football tournament to Ghana on away goals during the qualifying playoffs, we still have footballers of Nigerian roots partaking in the World Cup finals with other countries.

Below are footballers with Nigerian roots playing for other countries:

Bukayo Saka – England

20-Year-Old Bukayo Saka was born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents and the Arsenal man decided to play for the country of his birth. Saka’s parents, Yomi, his mother, Adenike Saka were at the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar to watch their son play for England in the World Cup.

While the Arsenal Star may have chosen to represent England, his country of birth, Saka, whose parents hail from Ogun State in Nigeria, put up a show with two goals in the Qatar as the Three Lions beat Iran 6-2 in their opening match of the 2022 World Cup, to the delight of his countrymen in England and Nigeria.

Jamal Musiala – Germany

Musiala is a German professional footballer who plays as a midfielder or winger for the Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and the German national team.

Born in Germany to a Nigerian father and a German mother, he was raised in England from the age of seven. Musiala represented both Germany and England at the youth level and eventually pledged his allegiance to the German national team for future games in February 2021, representing the side at UEFA Euro 2020 and currently at the FIFA World Cup.

Sam Adekugbe – Canada

On Wednesday night, Canada’s World Cup campaign got underway, and several of the players were making their big-stage debuts. Sam Adekugbe, one of these debutantes, was born to Nigerian parents in London, United Kingdom, and his family emigrated to Canada when he was just nine years old.

Sam was born on January 16, 1995. He is a Canadian professional soccer player who plays as a left-back for Süper Lig club Hatayspor and the Canada national team.

Karim Adeyemi – Germany

Adeyemi was born in Munich, Germany, to a Nigerian father and a Romanian mother. He pledged his allegiance to Germany after making the World Cup Squad of the European country.

Adeyemi plays as a forward for the Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and the German national team.

Austria International, David Alaba is the most senior football player in the European country at the Qatar World Cup.  Alaba plies his trade for Spanish Giant, Real Madrid as a defender. He is regarded as one of the best left-backs of his generation.

Alaba who grew through the ranks in Bayern Munich was born to a Nigerian dad and a Philippines mom in  Vienna Austria. Alaba’s father is a prince in Ogere Remo, Ogun State Nigeria. He recently made headlines for building a block of public toilets for natives of his hometown.

Manuel Akanji – Switzerland

Swiss professional footballer, Manuel Akanji plays as a defender for Premier League club Manchester City and the Switzerland national team. Akanji was born in Neftenbach, Switzerland to a Swiss mother and a Nigerian father.

Noah Arinzechukwu Okafor – Germany

Okafor, Swiss professional footballer plays as a midfielder for the Austrian Bundesliga club Red Bull Salzburg and the Switzerland national team.

Okafor was born in  Binningen, Switzerland to a Nigerian father and a Swiss Mother. He is 22 years old.
