WIZKID: Ojuelegba Is A Very Rough Place To Grow Up As A Child, But It Shaped Me To What I Am Today
Singer Wizkid has credited his former neighborhood Ojuelegba for shaping him into the global super star he is today.
The 31-year-old described the Lagos suburb as “a tough place to grow up as a child” in an interview with Flutterwave founder Olugebenga Agboola.
“It all began in a little place in Ojuelegba,” he said about the start of his career.
“It was a very very roughy place to grow up as a child but that is what has shaped me into who I am today.”
On what motivates him the most, the “Essence” singer described the negative responses he got early in his career as his major driving force telling the Olugbenga: “It was me having to hear no, having to prove myself every time I walk into a room.”
Despite achieving major success with a Grammy nomination and several Billboard Hot 100 entries, the father-of-three says he is just getting started.
“I had a vision to take the music from Lagos to the world… We’re just starting now,” he said.
Wizkid immortalized Ojuelegba in his 2016 song of the same name which chronicles his childhood and early career.
The song is widely regarded as the song that made Wizkid a global star, with celebrities like Drake, Swizz Beats, Alicia Keys, Kylie Jenner, Karreuche Tran and Ellie Goulding.
