Bella Shmurda’s Skirt: Nigerian Artistes in Gender-Bending Clothing
Nigerian singer, Bella Shmurda was still trending on Twitter days after performing at the Big Brother Naija live show
But it was his outfit, not his performance that got fans talking. The 25-year-old hit the stage in a white hoodie over a blue spooky jacket and a matching skirt.
Many users joked that the jacket made him look like a Covid variant but that’s a story for another day. The majority wondered why Bella, a Nigerian man was wearing a skirt In public.

I’m not woke or religious enough to go into the political or moral implications of Bella’s sartorial choices so I’ll just settle for making a list of at four other Nigerian artistes who have recently worn gender-bending clothing in public.
1. Brymo playing the piano in a g-string in 2018 video ‘Heya’
According to him, was meant to portray a bush man living in the city.
‘The video portrayed a bush man living in the city. If you look around, you wouldn’t see much evidence of civilisation. We did not create most of the things that we use in this country and that’s not good. We need to think,’ he told The Punch.
2. Burna Boy performing in an outfit which looked like it had been inspired by something Arya Starr wore earlier.
Though in his case I suspect his shirt is not exactly a ‘crop’ top, it just happens to be two sizes two small.
3. Fireboy DML performing in LA wearing a leather jacket and a leather skirt.
4. Victony in a pink jacket and matching skirt in these pictures shared to Instagram in January.
