Peter Obi congratulates Nigerian medallists at Commonwealth Games
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has congratulated the three Nigerian athletes who have won medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games taking place in Birmingham.
‘Heartwarming news from the Commonwealth Games. Adijat Adenike Olarinoye’s Games-record gold in the 55kg weightlifting and Rafiatu Folashade Lawal’s Games-record gold in the 59kg weightlifting event was followed by Edidiong Joseph Umoafia’s bronze in the men’s 67kg category…,’ he tweeted on Monday.
Weightlifter, Adijat Olarinoye won Nigeria’s first gold medal at this year’s games, emerging overall best in the women’s 55k category.
She lifted 92kg in the snatch, 111kg in clean and jerk, lifting 203kg in total to set a new record at the games.
Rafiatu Lawal won the country’s second gold in the same sport in the women’s 59kg final. She lifted 90kg in snatch, 116kg in clean and jerk, and 206kg in total to set three records at the games.
The third one came from another weightlifter Edidiong Joseph, clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 67kg category on Sunday.
Team Nigeria is now number nine on the medal table.
Nigeria is being represented by 94 athletes including women’s world record Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume who won a silver medal at the World Athletics Championship in Oregon.
