What A Month! 5 Major Headlines That Shook Nigeria In May So Far…

The month of May has been a swing for Nigerians and we’re barely halfway through it. In Burbles Media’s third monthly publication, we tried so hard not to be the doomsday news carrier but we all had inklings of a not-so-good month bar the gruesome killing of the martyred Sokoto female student.

Off the back of Yul Edochie and Judy Austin’s shocking marriage at the end of April, May rolled with less bearable dramas – Pun very much intended.

From Blood Sister’s premiere to a clergyman’s resurfaced genitals and then, questions about Genevieve Nnaji’s mental health to Afrobeats recent bangers. Not to mention the recent religious killing in Northern Nigeria. Can it get any more oscillating?

Blood Sisters – The Good

The buzz started with the release of Blood Sisters, Nollywood’s first original series on the global streaming platform, Netflix. We can only have the marketing team for this project in our thoughts. Pray tell them not to have envisaged releasing Nollywood’s biggest production in recent years when it’s murky waters for Nigerians attention span at the moment.

The highly acclaimed four-part show encapsulates the lives of two best friends, Kemi (Nancy Isime) and Sarah (Ini Dima-Okojie )whom in sudden twist of fate became fugitives after killing Kola Ademola (Deyemi Okanlawon), Sarah’s Groom hours before their engagement ceremony.

As published in our Review of Blood Sisters, beneath the social media acclaim, the crime thriller is a laudable effort flawed by plot holes, lack of character development, and inconsistent pacing. Nigerians, however, cared less as they found treasure that makes the watch a worthy one.

Stephanie Otobo’s Resurfaced Beef – The Unfazed

Canadian-based Nigerian singer, Stephanie Otobo on Monday, May 9, 2022 took to Twitter to leak intimate photos of herself and Apostle Suleman.

The singer claimed to have been arrested by orders of the Omega Fire Ministry overseer while she was in Lagos for a video shoot with Afrobeats doyen, Timaya. There is a back story from few years back when Ms Otobo leaked an allege affair with Apostle Johnson Suleman.

The clergyman remained unhinged as he gave no direct response to his accuser.

Genevieve’s Mental Health – The Rife Rumour

Unverified reports by Instagram blogger, Gistlover claims that seasoned Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji has been admitted into a mental facility in The United States.

The controversial blogger persisted that the actress suffers from psychotic disorders and currently undergoing treatment in Dallas, Texas.

Chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, Emeka Rolla said the apex body in Nollywood is not aware of the reports and efforts to reach the Lionheart actress have been made.

Martyred Deborah Samuel – The Criminal Indoctrination


Nigerians are still in shock following the murder of Deborah Samuel, a 200 level student of Shehu Shagari College of education, Sokoto, who was killed by an irate mob for insulting the Holy Prophet (SAW)

It was reported that Samuel made a comments against the prophet on a student’s WhatsApp group when other students kept sending religious post to the group.

According to eye witness account, Deborah was taken to safety at the school’s security post but a mob trailed her, overpowered the security personnel upon find her and stoned her to death before setting ablaze her lifeless body.

All of these was dumped on Nigerians casually on Thursday afternoon.

Thank God Its Friday Afrobeats Day – The Respite

Friday was a buffet for Nigerian music as different singing heavyweights coincidentally released new tracks. Davido’s Stand Strong rendition with US choir, The Samples serenades the soul in gloom days as these. Burna Boy’s Last Last makes one believe misery needs a company. Other joints released include DJ Spinall and Asake’s Palazo while Zinolesky paid homage to Asa by sampling her music in his new release Loving You.
