Nigeria’s Tems Becomes First African Singer To Debut No. 1 On Billboard Hot 100

Afrobeats sensation one of Nigeria’s biggest export, Tems achieves a new milestone as she becomes the first African artiste to sit atop the US Billboard Hot 100 songs chart.

The 26-year-old earned her third entry into the famed Billboard Charts after Future‘s “Wait For U,” featuring Drake and Tems, soars in at No. 1.

Tems previous entry on the Global music rank was a number one spot on the Billboard Next Big Sound chart and number-five on the Billboard Emerging Artists chart in the same year.

Her recent collaborative project with Future and Drake makes her the first African artist to debut at number one, and the second Nigerian artist to top the chart – the first being Wizkid.

In May 2022, Tems’ song, “Higher”, from her debut extended play, For Broken Ears (2020) was sampled on the single “Wait For U” by Future alongside Drake, released off the Album, I NEVER LIKED YOU leading her to be credited as a featured artist.

Tems’ stock has been on the rise. Following her feature on Made In Lagos, she has gone on to bag critical acclaim and numerous award nominations and wins, multiple billboard entries, a critically acclaimed EP, Drake feature, a Rihanna co-sign and Adele fan moment.

Future’s 2nd Hot 100 No. 1: Future claims his first Hot 100 No. 1 as a lead artist and second overall, following, again, his and Young Thug’s featured roles on Drake’s “Way 2 Sexy,” which opened atop the Sept. 18, 2021, chart.

Drake’s 10th Hot 100 No. 1: Drake collects his milestone 10th Hot 100 No. 1, and first since “Way 2 Sexy.” He first led as featured on Rihanna’s “What’s My Name?,” for a week in November 2010, and first ruled as a lead artist with “One Dance,” featuring Wizkid and Kyla, for 10 frames beginning in March 2016.
